Mayem: Goa's Family Destination

#

There’s an air of nostalgia that surrounds Mayem Lake, situated in the Bicholim taluka of north Goa. As one of Goa’s most popular lakes, this GTDC property was famous for its pedal boats that couples could take out into the lake, or where families could sit by the banks and enjoy a picnic. Though in the recent past the lake lost popularity due to poor maintenance, Mayem has now reclaimed its pride after having overhauled all the amenities there, and adding a wide variety of eco-leisure activities for the family, with the help of the Champions Yacht Club. In keeping with the eco-friendly guidelines of the GTDC, Champions Yacht Club has ensured that all the rides are battery operated, with the structures at the lake being mainly wooden, and the lighting solar powered. Swimming in the lake, though, is strictly prohibited.

So how do you get to this green paradise? There are various routes, all of which are easily mapped through Google Maps, but once you’re in Mayem though, finding the lake can be quite difficult. The roads are unmarked and the signboards direct you to the village of Mayem, and not the lake. Easily missed is the sole little sign printed on an A4 size paper and stuck to a board. It’s advisable to ask the friendly locals to guide you though, and if you’re lucky, find a generous soul who’s willing to escort you there.

Once you are finally at the lake, however, you will notice that the area has been well defined with a children’s play area, a small café and gift shop. You have to pay a fee of Rs 10 per person to enter the lake, after which point, all the amenities in the children’s play area are free. These include the bouncing castles, swings, slides, swimming pool, etc. The real fun is at the lake, and the rates for the various boats differ, though you can take an unlimited pass and try out all the different rides for as long as you want. The staff attendants are helpful, and ensure that adults and children are given life jackets before stepping onto the jetty. While the majority of the water rides are self-driven, some of the bigger boats require to be piloted by an attendant.

Mayem lake is the ideal family destination in Goa, and with the summer holidays on, kids will love the water activities while beating the heat. And with the improvements in infrastructure, Mayem lake has now become a place where you could get away on a weekday or a weekend, without even leaving the state.
